There are great simple DIY projects you can do with shipping pallets, but where do you get them without spending a ton of cash? Our friends at Old World Garden Farms have some suggestions.
You can always just order them online, but wooden pallets are everywhere and easy to get for free. Old World Garden Farms has a number of suggestions, but the one that stood out to us was remarkably simple: Visit small, independent or locally-owned garden stores, nurseries, hardware stores, and power equipment stores.
The key here is to visit independent stores?large companies and major hardware stores likely have contracts with pallet removal companies, so they won't fork them over. Small businesses though may be more than happy to let you take pallets or used wood off their hands. They also suggest visiting new home construction sites and subdivisions and just asking nicely: often house-building crews just burn waste lumber and shipping pallets when they're no longer useful, which can be a goldmine for a DIY-er looking for wood that's sturdy and safe to use indoors.
