90% Lincoln

All Critics (221) | Top Critics (43) | Fresh (199) | Rotten (22)

It's the most remarkable movie Steven Spielberg has made in quite a spell, and one of the things that makes it remarkable is how it fulfills those expectations by simultaneously ignoring and transcending them.

Lincoln paints a powerful and compelling portrait of the man who has become an icon. We don't need to see more of his life to understand how rare a figure he was - this window is more than sufficient.

Lincoln offers proof of what magic can happen when an actor falls in love with his character. Because as great as Day-Lewis has been in his many parts, he has never seemed quite so smitten.

The film masterfully captures the dual dilemmas facing the president in the final months of his life: how to bring the war between the states to an end, and how to eradicate slavery, once and for all.

Lincoln is a stirring reminder that politics can be noble. Might there be a lesson here for today's shrill D.C. discourse? 'Tis a consummation devoutly to be wished.

Day-Lewis' voice is thin and reedy, which jibes with historical accounts but subverts our expectations. His attitude makes listeners lean in, and so do we, magnetized by his kindly reserve.

A shamelessly hagiographic chronicling of the final months of the Great Emancipator's life.

It may indulge its subject a little too much but it highlights the road to a momentous occasion with an intimacy that gives emotional weight to political machinations

The actual vote on the Amendment proves surprisingly gripping, but elsewhere moments of piety and sentimentality undermine Day-Lewis's magnificent, credibly flesh-and-blood Lincoln.

It's an impeccably crafted history lesson that, unusually for a Spielberg film, tells us why its subject matter is important, instead of engaging with it on an emotional level.

Daniel Day-Lewis gives a towering performance in Steven Spielberg's bravest picture to date.

N?o ? um retrato multidimensional de um indiv?duo complexo, mas uma f?bula. Um letreiro de "Era uma vez..." em seu in?cio n?o ficaria deslocado.

Against the odds, Spielberg makes something genuinely exciting of the backstage wheedling.

A historic epic from Steven Spielberg carries a lot of baggage, but he surprises us with a remarkably contained approach to an iconic figure. What's most unexpected is that this is a political drama, not a biopic.

[Spielberg is] a man on a mission. And his not so secret weapon is Day-Lewis, an actor so charismatic it's hard to think clearly while he's on screen.

Perhaps this is a rose-tinted view of Lincoln - he comes across as more living saint than man - but as cinema, it is powerful, gripping and thoroughly entertaining.

Spielberg is always a professional, and the film is never less than well-crafted.

By stepping into history without fear, favour or any overfamiliar biopic folly, Lincoln, handsome, often thrilling, and movingly human, goes into history as a major movie achievement.

A rousing, rigorous and morally complex legal procedural more than a trad biopic. And all the better for it.

his is a warm, celebratory film, handsomely shot, with a subtle, sympathetic central performance from Day-Lewis, and tremendous support from Tommy Lee Jones ...

Spielberg's plodding camera endlessly tracks and circles Day-Lewis in complete reverence, while veteran composer John Williams delivers yet another repetitive Jurassic Extra-Terrestrial score.

What a feat from Day-Lewis: the nearest thing a 21st-century biopic can get to a seance.

It's tiresome to describe Day-Lewis as brilliant, so let's push the boat out: his Lincoln is absolutely wonderful.

A thoughtful and thought-proving picture.

Lincoln reminds you how little has actually changed in one-and-a-half centuries - presidents still have to worry about the war dead while trying to create a better life for the fractured living.

Impressively directed and superbly written, this is an absorbing and enjoyable political drama with an Oscar-worthy central performance from Daniel Day-Lewis.

Tornado watch in effect for central Indiana overnight

A line of severe storms is making its way through Indiana early Wednesday morning, triggering weather watches and warnings across the state.

At?4:15 a.m., Duke Energy was reporting about 8,400 (down from more than 18,000) customers without power.?More than 2,400 customers were reported without power in Lawrence County, and 2,300 in Johnson.

At the same time, IPL was reporting about 1,700 customers (down from 3,100) without electricity, including nearly 1,300 in the northeast part of Marion County.

A power line was reported down in the 6200 block of E. 86th Street and a tree fell onto a house was reported in a neighborhood near 75th Street and Dean Road.? Several other trees were down in that area.

Winds reaching 70 mph were reported in Brownsburg ahead of the storms. A spotter in Bloomington reported a 64 mph wind gust.

Tornado Watch issued

A tornado watch has been issued for?33?Indiana counties until early Wednesday morning.

BARTHOLOMEW...CLARK...CRAWFORD...DECATUR...DELAWARE...DUBOIS...FLOYD...HANCOCK...
HARRISON...HENRY...JACKSON...JEFFERSON...JENNINGS...ORANGE...PERRY...RANDOLPH...RUSH...
SCOTT...SHELBY...SPENCER...WASHINGTON

The watch remains in effect until 5 a.m.

Forecast

Central Indiana is under a slight risk for severe storms overnight, with the most likely timing for storms between midnight and 6:00 am. Damaging winds are most likely, but isolated tornadoes and hail can't be ruled out. Southwest Indiana including Evansville is under a moderate severe risk.

In addition to the severe threat, there's also a flood threat. One to two inches of rain could cause some street flooding and rising rivers are likely. Since our ground is already saturated, flooding in the usual spots is possible. A flood watch runs from 7:00 pm to 11:00 am.

Temperatures top out in the low to mid-60s Tuesday (the record is 66 set in 2002) with the warmth lasting into the early hours of the morning along with the storms. Behind the storms and cold front, temperatures will drop much of the day Wednesday.

Wednesday morning's temperature around 8:00 am will probably be around 59. We'll fall into the 30s by late afternoon. There could be some passing rain showers that turn to snow showers as the colder air works in. That leads to a bitterly cold end to the week. Some light snow is possible Saturday, then we warm up again.

Some tips for tonight: clear out your storm drains today before the heavy rain arrives, and before you go to bed, make sure your weather radio is on to alert you if any warnings are issued while you're asleep. You can also sign up for the Personal Forecast ?to get alerts delivered straight to your smart phone or email.

Strong winds and tornadoes are also possible from Texas to Alabama and as far north as Michigan. The temperature in the central Missouri college town of Columbia reached 77 degrees on Monday, a record high for January. The spring-like conditions came after a spell of freezing rain, and forecasts predict early-morning snow on Wednesday.

The National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla., says the risks of tornadoes touching down Tuesday is greatest in northeast Texas, northern Louisiana, northwest Mississippi, southeast Missouri and much of Arkansas. That system is expected to hit much of the eastern United States on Wednesday.

Jane Austen tourism booms as 'Pride and Prejudice' turns 200

9 hrs.

When a classic love story has a big birthday, it?s time to have a ball ? literally.

Monday marks the 200th anniversary of the publication of ?Pride and Prejudice,? the Jane Austen novel that introduced feisty heroine Elizabeth Bennet, seemingly aloof Mr. Darcy and a world of manor homes and grand estates that turned England into a dream destination for readers around the globe.

Balls, dances and other special events are taking place this year to celebrate the bicentennial as Austen continues to lure travelers.

?She?s hugely important,? said Meredith Pearson, a spokeswoman for VisitBritain. The country?s national tourism agency maintains a guide for fans eager to experience the "Pride and Prejudice" lifestyle.

?We found that, to this day, because of the popularity of those stories, it?s something that visitors really, really enjoy doing,? Pearson said.

Even if you haven?t read the book, chances are you?re familiar with the plot of ?Pride and Prejudice? after catching the recent film version starring Keira Knightley, seeing ?Bridget Jones? Diary????a modern reboot of the novel ? or watching the blockbuster 1995 BBC mini-series starring Colin Firth, which led to a huge surge in visitors, Pearson noted.

No wonder, then, tourism is booming along Austen?s trail in England, a path that traditionally takes visitors to the resort city of Bath, the verdant landscapes of Derbyshire and the village of Chawton.

The author lived in Bath from 1801 to 1806 and chose the city as the setting for two of her novels. Today, about 60,000 people a year flock to The Jane Austen Centre, which chronicles her Bath experience, said Jennie Rogers, general manager of the attraction.

Besides taking in the Centre?s permanent exhibition and sampling Georgian biscuits, visitors can also try on fashions from Austen?s era ? empire-waist dresses, bonnets, gloves and parasols for the ladies; waistcoats, coats and top hats for the gentlemen.

?Our visitors become overwhelmed when trying on our replica costumes,? Rogers said. ?(They) love the romance of Jane's novels and the way in which they can relate to her character's dilemmas and issues???even today.?

To celebrate the 200th anniversary of ?Pride and Prejudice,? the Centre is hosting an ?International Readathon? on Monday, when dozens of actors, authors and Austen experts will read the book aloud in its entirety during a 12-hour period.

The city of Bath has put together a suggested itinerary for Austen fans, including taking a walk along the Royal Crescent, where the author often strolled, and enjoying afternoon tea in The Pump Room, which was a popular gathering spot during Austen?s era.

If you?d like to dress up and party Austen-style, there?s the Jane Austen Festival Regency Costumed Summer Ball on June 22, which features Regency dancing???the intricate choreography that requires ladies and gentlemen to form lines and circles, and twirl around and bow to each other.

?We hope to dance Mr. Beveridge's Maggot???a dance made popular by the BBC 1995 version of ?Pride and Prejudice,?? said organizer Jackie Herring.

The novel is also the theme of this year?s Bath Jane Austen Festival, scheduled to take place Sept. 13-21, complete with a Mr. Darcy lookalike contest, a masked ball and workshops on how to perfect the Regency look.

Fans who want to stroll through grand estates and gardens featured in the novels should head to the Derbyshire region of England where many of the Austen movies and mini-series were filmed. The district maintains a list of all the locations used in the productions.

Pearson thinks U.S. visitors love the sites because they?re so uniquely British.

?It?s part of that fairly tale, in a way. Because (the U.S. is) such a young country comparatively, the fact that there are these gorgeous old manor houses and country houses ? it really takes people away and it really catches Americans? imagination,? Pearson said.

One such home is Chatsworth House, said to have inspired Pemberley, Mr. Darcy?s estate in ?Pride and Prejudice.?

To see where Austen created some of her characters, visit her former home in Chawton, now transformed into Jane Austen?s House Museum.

This is where the author spent the last eight years of her life and wrote ?Mansfield Park,? ?Emma,? and ?Persuasion.? To celebrate the 200th anniversary of ?Pride and Prejudice,? the museum is displaying first editions of the book, original illustrations and the table where Austen worked.

British tourism officials?? who are still giddy about the Queen?s Diamond Jubilee and all the other events that drew visitors to the region last year???are hoping Austen?s legacy will continue the momentum in 2013.

?It?s a great year to come over and experience all of the literary connections in the UK,? Pearson said.

S&P 500 slips after rally, but Apple lifts Nasdaq

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The S&P 500 edged lower on Monday as a four-week rally stalled, while a rebound in Apple shares helped buoy the Nasdaq.

Caterpillar shares helped cap losses in the Dow industrials even as the company posted a 55 percent drop in quarterly profit due to a charge connected with accounting fraud at a Chinese subsidiary and weak demand among its dealers. Caterpillar's shares, down 2.2 percent in the past three sessions, rose 1.5 percent Monday to $96.97.

The S&P 500 is coming off a streak of eight sessions of gains, the longest in eight years. On Friday, the major U.S. stock indexes closed a fourth straight week of gains with the S&P 500 ending the session above 1,500 for the first time in more than five years.

The rally has left the market vulnerable to a short-term pullback of up to 3 percent in the S&P 500 as bullish sentiment continues to rise, according to Richard Ross, Auerbach Grayson's global technical strategist.

"Still," Ross said, "we have a lot of momentum and nice seasonality, and technicals support the long-term bull market."

Data on Monday pointed to growing economic momentum as companies sensed improved consumer demand.

Thomson Reuters data showed that of the 150 companies in the S&P 500 that have reported earnings so far, 67.3 percent have beaten analysts' expectations, which is a higher proportion than over the past four quarters and above the average since 1994.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> fell 9.02 points or 0.06 percent, to 13,886.96, the S&P 500 <.spx> lost 1.5 points or 0.1 percent, to 1,501.46 and the Nasdaq Composite <.ixic> added 8.46 points or 0.27 percent, to 3,158.17.

Bargain hunters lifted Apple after the tech giant's stock dropped 14.4 percent in the previous two sessions. With Apple's stock up 2.4 percent at $450.29, the iPad and iPhone maker regained the title as the largest U.S. company by market capitalization as Exxon Mobil fell 0.9 percent to $90.94 and slipped back to second place.

"I think there is more downside in Apple if you did get a broad market pullback," Auerbach Grayson's Ross said.

"I'd be patient unless you're a trader. It might not be the most attractive entry point."

U.S. durable goods orders jumped 4.6 percent in December, a pace that far outstripped expectations for a rise of 1.8 percent. Pending home sales unexpectedly dropped 4.3 percent. Analysts were looking for an increase of 0.3 percent.

Equities have also gained support from a recent agreement in Washington to extend the government's borrowing power. On Monday, Fitch Ratings said that agreement removed the near-term risk to the country's 'AAA' rating.

Hess Corp shares shot up 5.3 percent to $62.02 after the company said it would exit its refining business, freeing up to $1 billion of capital. Separately, hedge fund Elliott Associates is looking for approval to buy about $800 million more in Hess stock.

Keryx Biopharmaceuticals Inc said a late-stage trial of its experimental kidney disease drug met the main study goal, and its shares soared 67 percent to $5.75.

(AP) ? Three months after Superstorm Sandy ravaged coastal areas in much of the Northeast, Congress on Monday sent a $50.5 billion emergency relief measure for storm victims to President Barack Obama for his signature.

"I commend Congress for giving families and businesses the help they deserve, and I will sign this bill into law as soon as it hits my desk," Obama said in a statement late Monday.

Despite opposition from conservatives concerned about adding billions of dollars more to the nation's debt, the Senate cleared the long-delayed bill, 62-36, after House Republicans had stripped it earlier this month of spending unrelated to disasters. All 36 votes against the bill were from Republican senators.

"This is a huge relief," said Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., noting the vote came 91 days after Sandy struck.

The House passed the bill two weeks ago. Lawmakers say the money is urgently needed to start rebuilding homes, businesses, public transportation facilities and other infrastructure damaged by the Oct. 29 storm, one of the worst to strike the Northeast.

Sandy roared up the East Coast and is blamed for more than 130 deaths and tens of billions of dollars in property damage, particularly in New York and New Jersey. The measure is aimed primarily at helping residents and businesses as well as state and local governments rebuild.

The biggest chunk of money is $16 billion for Housing and Urban Development Department community development block grants. Of that, about $12.1 billion will be shared among Sandy victims as well as those from other federally declared disasters in 2011-2013. The remaining $3.9 billion is solely for Sandy-related projects.

More than $11 billion will go to the Federal Emergency Management Agency's disaster relief aid fund for providing shelter, restoring power and other storm-interrupted utility services and meeting other immediate needs arising from Sandy and other disasters. Another $10 billion is devoted to repairing New York and New Jersey transit systems and making them more resistant to future storms.

Sen. Dan Coats, R-Ind., said Republicans weren't seeking "to undermine" help for Sandy victims but instead were trying to make sure that the money was actually being spent on emergency needs.

"We're simply trying to say we need some standards," Coats said.

Earlier in January, Congress approved and Obama signed a $9.7 billion bill to replenish the National Flood Insurance Program, which has received well over 100,000 flood insurance claims related to Sandy. Added to the new, $50.5 billion package, the total is roughly in line with the $60.4 billion that Obama requested in December.

The aid package was greased for passage before the last Congress adjourned and the new one came in on Jan. 3. But Speaker John Boehner refused to bring it to the floor after two-thirds of House Republicans voted against a "fiscal cliff" deficit-reduction deal raising taxes on couples making more than $450,000 a year while deferring some $24 billion in spending cuts to defense and domestic programs.

The ruckus after the Senate had passed an earlier $60.4 billion Sandy relief package by a nearly 2-to-1 margin on Dec. 28 exposed deep political divisions within Republican ranks. "There's only one group to blame for the continued suffering of these innocent victims, the House majority and their speaker, John Boehner," Republican New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie fumed at the time.

Top House Republicans responded by bringing new Sandy aid legislation to the floor under ground rules designed to win over as many Republicans as possible while retaining support from Democrats eager to approve as much in disaster aid as possible.

GOP leaders cut spending in the Senate bill unrelated to disasters. One would have transferred $1 billion for training Iraqi policemen to instead be used to bolster security at U.S. diplomatic missions. The shift in money followed a Sept. 11 terrorist attack on the American consulate in Benghazi, Libya, where the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans were killed.

Also deleted were $188 million for an Amtrak expansion project that included new, long-planned tunnels from New Jersey to Penn Station in Manhattan, and another $150 million for fisheries disasters that states such as Alaska and Mississippi could have shared.

After all the cost-cutting, 179 House Republicans still voted against the disaster aid package with only 49 favoring it. GOP leaders had to rely on yes votes from 192 Democrats to pass it.

As with past natural disasters, the Sandy aid bill is not offset with spending cuts, meaning the aid adds to the deficit. The lone exception is an offset provision requiring that $3.4 billion for Army Corps of Engineers projects to protect against future storms be covered by an equal amount of unspecified spending cuts in other programs before next October.

The Senate on Monday rejected, 35-62, an attempt by Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, to amend the final package Monday with a provision to cut federal programs across the board by one-half of 1 percent through 2021 as a way to prevent the disaster aid from swelling the U.S. debt.

As of Monday, FEMA said it spent $3.3 billion in disaster relief money for shelter, restoring power and other immediate needs arising from the storm.

New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, New Hampshire, Ohio, Delaware, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and the District of Columbia have shared that money.

Morrissey pauses tour over bleeding ulcer

Reuters/Eliseo Fernandez

By Alex Dobuzinskis, Reuters

British rock singer Morrissey is postponing six performances on his U.S. tour due to a bleeding ulcer, his spokeswoman said on Sunday.

"Morrissey is expected to make a full recovery and thanks everyone concerned for their support during this time," his representative Lauren Papapietro said in a statement.

Morrissey, the former lead singer for 1980s alternative rock band The Smiths, checked into Beaumont Hospital on Friday in the Detroit suburb of Royal Oak, Papapietro said.

She declined to say if he remains hospitalized.

Due to his bleeding ulcer, Morrissey is postponing his upcoming shows in Asheville, N.C.; Nashville, Tenn.; Atlanta, Ga.; Lawrence, Kan.; Clear Lake, Iowa; and Lincoln, Neb., Papapietro said.

He plans to resume his tour on February 9 in Las Vegas.

Due to an illness in his band, Morrissey, 53, canceled his show Thursday in Flint, Mich., and postponed a Friday night performance in Minneapolis and another engagement set for Saturday night in Chicago, Papapietro said.

Morrissey, whose hits include "First of the Gang to Die" and "Irish Blood, English Heart," toured North America last fall, played some shows in Australia and New Zealand in December and returned to the United States this month.

He kicked off his latest tour with a performance of his unreleased song "Action is My Middle Name" on "The Late Show with David Letterman" in New York.

'Fruitvale,' 'Blood Brothers' win at Sundance

By Reuters

PARK CITY, Utah -- Drama film "Fruitvale" and documentary "Blood Brothers" won the top awards at the Sundance Film Festival on Saturday, giving them a big boost to reach independent movie audiences this year.

George Frey / EPA

Director Ryan Coogler wins the audience award for dramatic film for "Fruitvale" at the awards ceremony at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, on Jan. 26.

"Fruitvale," starring Octavia Spencer and Michael B. Jordan and directed by 26-year-old, first-time filmmaker Ryan Coogler," picked up the U.S. drama jury and audience awards for its "moral and social urgency."

The film is based on the true story of 22-year-old Oscar Grant, who was killed by police in Oakland, Calif., on New Year's Eve in 2008 and whose death sparked riots against police brutality. Movie studio The Weinstein Company purchased distribution rights for the film.

"This film had a profound impact on the audience that saw it ... this award goes out to my home in the Bay Area where Oscar Grant breathed, slept, loved, had fun and survived for 22 years," Coogler said in his acceptance speech.

Oscar-winning documentarian Davis Guggenheim awarded the U.S. documentary jury prize to "Blood Brothers," saying it shook the voting panel to their core.

The documentary follows an American man who moves to Africa and works with children suffering from HIV at an orphanage, and through his work, the children gain a voice.

George Frey / EPA

Director Steve Hoover accepts the award for best documentary for the film "Blood Brothers" at the Sundance Film Festival.

"It is so encouraging for the kids ... their lives are so encouraging, and they die and no one remembers their name ... To take their story so that everyone sees it, it's so awesome," director Steve Hoover said."

Young actress Shailene Woodley, praised for her performance in "The Descendants" last year, and her co-star Miles Teller won the Special Jury acting prize in "The Spectacular Now."

Actress Lake Bell, who made her directorial debut in the U.S. drama category with quirky comedy "In A World," picked up the drama screenwriting award.

Hosted by actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who premiered his raunchy directorial debut "Don Jon's Addiction" this year, the Sundance Film Festival Awards pick winners at the top gathering for independent movies made outside of Hollywood's major studios.

"Sundance is a community of people of filmmakers and film lovers who all believe together that there's more to movies than glitz and glamour and money and the box office. In Hollywood, you can feel like a freak if you talk about movies as art, and here, you don't have that," Gordon-Levitt said.

World cinema winners
The Sundance Film Festival, now in its 35th year, is backed by Robert Redford's Sundance Institute. The 10-day gathering of the independent film industry is held in snowy Park City, Utah.

In previous years, films that win the top prizes at the Sundance Film Festival often go on to achieve Hollywood awards success as well.

Last year, mythological drama "Beasts of the Southern Wild" won the top prize at Sundance and is now nominated for four Oscars in major categories.

The award winners are voted for by special juries of industry professionals and by the audience for the audience favorite awards.

In the world cinema categories, South Korean drama "Jiseul" picked up the grand jury drama prize. The film, directed by Muel O, follows the residents of a small town who were forced to hide in a cave for 60 days after the military attacked their village.

Cambodian documentary "A River Changes Course," about three young Cambodians struggling with adversity in a country ravaged by war and debt, picked up the world cinema grand jury award.

"Events like these really bring our communities together to share in the beauty of the world and the beauty of our future," director Kalyanee Mam said.

"Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer," which follows the story of three members of a Russian feminist punk band jailed for performing a "punk prayer" in a Russian Orthodox church, picked up special jury prize in the world documentary category.

Co-director Mike Lerner said the three members of the band had "started a feminist revolution that we hope will continue around the world."

'REST IN PEACE' ? Just for a while

Most of Southern Italy is very mountainous and this makes arable land very precious for growing crops and grazing animals. It leaves very little land suitable for cemeteries? and burials.cimitero-francese-venafro-01

Prior to Napoleon?s conquering of Italy bodies were interred in the crypt below the church floor. There was a strict order for the placing of the bodies. Babies and children were placed to the left of the altar (on the floor above), with women towards the back but still on the left. The rich and important were placed to the right of the altar with the common men at the back, on the right. As the bodies decayed, the bones and ashes were gathered and placed in a common vault. The rich and powerful might be permitted a vault in the church itself and this certainly happened in the larger churches. It usually involved building a side chapel at the family?s expense. If you are visiting old churches in Italy look on the floor for the old entrance to the crypt usually a square manhole with a ring at the center.

Note: when you are in Rome visit the Crypt of Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini (visit the Via Veneto area) is worth a visit if you?re interested in seeing some works of art made from the bones of more than 4000 dead monks.DSCN6859

Napoleon believed it was unhealthy to have bodies decaying below the church floor and ordered them cleared and moved to a cemetery outside the town limits. Of course now the towns have grown many are within the limits but in smaller towns they are still situated a distance from the town.

Burials usually take place within 24 hours of death unless there are special circumstances. Since many small towns do not have daily newspapers posters are printed and posted all over the town within hours of the death. If the deceased died at home the vigil would take place there with family members coming and going all through the night. If the death took place in the hospital then the body is not allowed to be taken home and the ?wake? tales place in the hospital in a special room set aside for the purpose. The deceased then goes directly to the church with a detour past their home for a short prayer before the mass and interment.

Cremation isn?t popular in Italy because the Catholic Church favors burial. However, it was an ancient Roman custom and it was introduced again in the early 1800?s under Napoleon for ?hygienic reasons? and discontinued after he was ousted.

Much more common is the placing of the deceased in a ?niche? for a period of up to 30 years after which the ashes and bones are removed and placed in the ?ossario? or bone vault. This can be a family vault or a communal vault. Niches are leased for periods of 30 to 99 years and can be used several times or just once. If the lease is renewed the deceased can continue to ?rest in peace? until the lease runs out and the ashes are removed. My father-in-law died several years ago after purchasing a 99 year lease on a ?niche? in the new part of the cemetery. He left a handwritten will which stated in no uncertain terms that he was to be left undisturbed until the lease ran out or he would put a curse on the person who disobeyed these instructions. This presented a dilemma for the family. Who would take responsibility for his ashes 99 years from now? Even his Great Grandchildren would probably not be around in 99 years and who would remember him and his curse?.

Most cemeteries have some in-ground burial plots for the poor who cannot afford to lease a ?niche?. Since a body decomposes much more quickly in the ground these plots can be reused after as little as 10 years.

Most niches and burial plots today have a photo of the deceased together with their name and dates (or years) of birth and death. These niches are regularly tended and adorned with fresh flowers. November 2nd is the National Day of the Dead (All souls day) with families gathering and touring the various locations and saying the traditional prayers. It is not unusual for family gatherings to happen that weekend, much like the American Thanksgiving.
Chrysanthemums are often used at funerals and in memory of the dead in Europe. When Grace Kelly was newly married she didn?t realize this and put a vase of these flowers on a guest?s bedside table. Prince Ranier was very upset and berated her. ?Don?t you know that these flowers symbolize death in Europe?? he said.

I know how she felt having bought Chrysanthemums to take to a dying relative of my husband. When he saw what I had chosen he did a ?donut? in the parking lot and ordered me to return them and choose something else.

All of the above means that unless your ancestor is rich or famous it is unlikely you will find a grave for them in Southern Italy. However, if you have a relative who died in Italy during WW2 and is buried there you probably will find their grave. Italian communities gave up precious land to create cemeteries equal to anything you might find in North America and they are tended lovingly by the population for whom they gave their lives.

The Definitive Guide to Cloud Computing for Businesses ...

Written By: Dan Stelter

Cloud computing and its related business lines are exploding. Three of the world's leading information technology research companies agree: International Data Corporation predicts global revenue for public cloud services will hit $73 billion by 2015, Gartner estimates the market will be worth $150 billion by 2014 and Forrester believes cloud services will be worth $241 billion by 2020.

Compare these estimates to the $40 billion estimated revenue generated by the cloud computing industry in 2012, and you see why there?s so much buzz. While the revenue estimates vary widely, the takeaway is the same: The industry will continue to grow at an explosive pace.

Behind the Cloud's Growth

There are a number of reasons that cloud computing for business is growing at a monumental rate:

Big data makes for big growth. To say there's been a dramatic increase in the amount of data being generated as a result of the Internet is putting it mildly. At the 2010 Techonomy conference at Lake Tahoe, then-Google CEO Eric Schmidt put it in perspective this way: ?There was five exabytes of information created between the dawn of civilization through 2003, but that much information is now created every two days, and the pace is increasing.? (An exabyte is a unit of information equal to one quintillion bytes, or one billion gigabytes.)

Now, debate exists as to whether that calculation is accurate ? it may actually take seven days ? but you get the point: We generate a massive, mind-blowing amount of information, at an exponentially higher rate than at any other time in history. This fact has created a need for business solutions that synthesize, analyze, process and store big data.

Increased mobility. If you already use cloud services, then you know that mobility is one of its greatest characteristics. People can work from anywhere there is Internet access, and they don't need to lug around a laptop to do so ? they can access their company's network via a third party PC or, more likely, a tablet or smartphone. In fact, a new survey conducted by the business technology group CSC found that accessibility to information through mobile devices was the biggest reason businesses adopted cloud computing.

Cost savings. Experts agree the cloud reduces IT infrastructure costs for small and medium-sized businesses, especially startups. Some of the savings include:

 • Expenses required to purchase technology and applications and keep them current
 • Maintenance expenses associated with fixing software and hardware
 • Employee salaries required to maintain networks
 • Hidden costs, such as the cost of recruiting IT employees and the facility and heating, ventilation and air conditioning costs associated with maintaining a network

Infrastructure flexibility. Although cloud technology doesn?t magically make most of your IT hardware disappear, it does offer more flexibility for your organization?s technological demands. Many businesses have found that using a hybrid of public and private cloud computing solutions provides the right mix of security and cost savings, and therefore the flexibility they need to continue growing.

Obstacles to Adoption

Some businesses aren't convinced that cloud computing will bring in the promised cost savings. There's a misconception that goes something like, ?Everything is hosted on someone else?s hardware, so there's? virtually no need for internal IT staff.? Many businesses find out that isn't the case.

Migration costs, employee training, occasional downtime, accurate bandwidth estimation and protection of information costs can be either forgotten in the total estimated cost or difficult to project. Although the cloud cost savings is often exaggerated, companies who take the time to carefully analyze the areas where the cloud functions most effectively do realize savings.

A second and much more prevalent concern is security. Smart IT managers question the security of the public cloud, as data stored there is more susceptible to hacking and viruses than private cloud data. One of the primary cloud computing challenges businesses face is middle managers who don?t want to spend money on the increased security of a private cloud and then get bogged down in contentious relationships with IT security managers. In reality, companies with security concerns often find that public cloud security is no more or less effective than the security in their own networks.

Finally, many businesses do find that the bandwidth they currently have simply isn?t sufficient for integrating the cloud into their existing IT infrastructure. For these businesses, integrating the cloud will be a considerable challenge, and one that may work best via a gradual, step-by-step process.

The Role of Mobile Devices

The proliferation of mobile devices among consumers and employees raises some interesting points about how tablet and smartphone technology integrates with the cloud. Morgan Stanley investment guru Mary Meeker predicted that by 2014, more people will access the Internet via mobile devices than PCs. Companies using the cloud are able to provide connectivity to their employees via the employees' mobile devices, prompting some workplaces to enact bring-your-own-device (BYOD) policies. While BYOD raises some security concerns, it?s become a primary driver of mobile networking growth. Cloud services have responded by configuring access to data over a variety of common Internet connections, and most providers have iPhone and Android mobile apps for data access.

Early Adopters Have an Edge

The general consensus is in: The Digital Age is moving into the cloud. Moving your business to cloud technology won?t instantly transform it into an ultra-efficient market leader, but the business leaders of yesterday who made the switch are realizing substantial and long-term returns on their investment. It may be just the edge your business needs.

Kymco to Supply BMW with i3 Electric Car Range Extender and New ...

The automotive world has been buzzing of late about BMW?s upcoming i3 electric car having an optional range extending gas-powered motorcycle engine. As our sister site Autoguide.com reports, the i3 will be available with an optional two-cylinder BMW motorcycle engine to power a generator which can recharge the electric motor and extend the vehicle?s range to 250 miles compared to a range of 60-90 miles relying just on the battery.

It turns out that two-cylinder motorcycle engine will actually be provided to BMW by Taiwanese manufacturer Kymco. This should be no real surprise as Kymco supplies several engines for the smaller-displacement BMW motorcycles including the engine for the single-cylinder G450X and the parallel-Twin engine used in the BMW C650GT and C600 Sport maxi-scooters.

This isn?t to say the i3?s range extender isn?t actually a BMW engine. Kymco produces the engines but BMW provided the tooling, specifications, and engineering. The BMW-Kymco partnership may not stop there however. According to WantChinaTimes, Kymco will supply a 400cc engine for another BMW scooter to slot in under the two 647cc C models.

On the subject of BMW scooters, the BMW C-Evolution electric scooter prototype also shares some technology with the i3, running on the same lithium-ion batteries while its TFT display is based on the screen used in the i3.

Strong results from Google, IBM lift tech stocks

(AP) ? Technology stocks are leading Wall Street to a higher close following strong earnings reports from Google and IBM.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 66 points to end at 13,779 Wednesday. Without the boost it got from IBM, the Dow would have closed flat.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index edged up two points to 1,494. The Nasdaq composite rose 10 points to 3,153.

Investors were also encouraged by the fact that the House of Representatives voted to let the government keep paying its bills for another four months, delaying the threat of a disastrous default by the U.S. government on its debt.

Falling stocks narrowly outnumbered rising ones on the New York Stock Exchange. Volume was in line with the recent average, 3.5 billion shares.

Online shipping marketplace uShip plans on ... - The Next Web

Online shipping marketplace uShip has announced that it is working on expanding its presence in Latin America, especially in Brazil.

This move follows the $18 million round of series C funding that the company raised from Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers (KPCB) last December.?According to its senior manager for global marketing, Adam Greenspan, uShip will use this capital to expand its global team in order to increase its market share.

As you may know, uShip connects consumers and businesses with transportation service providers of all sizes, from independent operators to large freight carriers and brokers. The site uses a reverse-auction format to make sure clients will get the best rate, while transporters monetize empty cargo space.

While uShip is headquartered Austin, TX, where it was founded in 2004, it also has a European office in Amsterdam, where 12 of its 130 employees are based. The Latin American operations are currently handled from the US, but things could change soon, Greenspan says:

?Stateside, we?ve brought on several in-language employees who are from Latin America, and resources from all departments are being shifted to focus on these new markets, most significantly within the Marketing organization. We have another couple of Latin America-focused [job vacancies] open at the moment, and we?re initially projecting to have boots on the ground by the middle of 2013.?

It?s worth noting that uShip?s push in Latin America started last July, when it launched local sites in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela. In addition, also hopes to get a fresh marketing boost from the second season A&E?s reality TV show ?Shipping Wars,? in which the company is featured, and which is currently airing across the region under the title ?Guerra de Entregas.?

Nevertheless, its vice-president and general manager of global business?Shawn Bose is aware that there is a long way to go to become as established in Brazil as it is in the US and Europe:

?Coming to Brazil, we really have to tap into our scrappy, startup roots. We?ve proven our model around the globe, but each new market is unique, and we have to approach it with fresh eyes.?

uship brazil e1358979990240 Online shipping marketplace uShip plans on leveraging Brazils logistics woes to bolster its business

Brazil?s huge distances and growing Internet penetration represent an opportunity for the company, Bose adds:

Brazil poses some challenges that are unique within the region. We hope to be able to better connect an industry that is pretty scattered. The size of the country alone makes logistics more difficult to coordinate, but we believe that uShip can help solve some of those headaches.?

According to Greenspan, uShip has been keeping an eye on the local startup scene, and even reached out to some of its potential competitors in the region to see how they might work together. As a matter of fact, several Latin American companies are already active in this market, such as NXTP Labs alum MercadoTransporte, which was a Startup Battle finalist at TNW Conference Latin America last August (see a video of their pitch).

Still, uShip is convinced that it is ahead of the competition, Greenspan explains:

?We believe our differentiator is in the depth of our product and our ability to scale it quickly. We already have the framework for a deep product suite ? integrated payments, location-based searching and alerts, a pro offering for commercial shippers and brokers ? that we?ll be able to adapt for Brazil and Latin America.?

In addition, the company is working on a mobile app to better serve the needs of transporters, who are constantly on the road as part of their job. This could also contribute to its growth in Brazil, where mobile phones are ubiquitous.

Oscars: Final Voting Schedule, Ballot Options Announced

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Members of the Academy, grab your ballots!

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the schedule for the final round of votes for this year's Oscars on Tuesday. The Academy also said that it had increased access to paper ballots in order to encourage engagement among Academy members.

Final balloting for the Oscars begins Friday, February 8 at 8 a.m. PT, and closes February 19 at 5 p.m. PT. Academy members who voted online during the nominations round will also be given the option to use paper ballots in the final round, as will members who registered to vote for the final round online. (Those who registered to vote online have until February 1 to request a paper ballot from the Academy's Membership Department.)

Voters will also be aided with the use of assisted voting stations in Los Angeles, New York and London, as well as a 24-hour call center.

This marks the first Oscars that have allowed electronic voting, which has led to a period of adjustment for Academy members. Late last year, the Academy extended the deadline to request paper ballots for the nominations round by two weeks, from November 30 to December14, in order to give voters adequate time to familiarize themselves with the various voting options.

The outreach effort has apparently worked; the Academy's chief operating officer Ric Robertson said Tuesday that this year's nominations round drew an increased number of votes over previous years.

"One of our basic goals at the Academy is to increase member engagement. Despite some challenges, more members voted for this year's nominations than they have in the past several years," Robertson said. "We are looking forward to a continuation of that trend in the final voting."

The Oscars will air live on February 24 from the Dolby Theatre at the Hollywood & Highland Center on ABC. with Seth MacFarlane hosting the program.

Find Free Shipping Pallets and Reclaimed Wood for your DIY Projects

Find Free Shipping Pallets and Reclaimed Wood for your DIY Projects There are great simple DIY projects you can do with shipping pallets, but where do you get them without spending a ton of cash? Our friends at Old World Garden Farms have some suggestions.

You can always just order them online, but wooden pallets are everywhere and easy to get for free. Old World Garden Farms has a number of suggestions, but the one that stood out to us was remarkably simple: Visit small, independent or locally-owned garden stores, nurseries, hardware stores, and power equipment stores.

The key here is to visit independent stores?large companies and major hardware stores likely have contracts with pallet removal companies, so they won't fork them over. Small businesses though may be more than happy to let you take pallets or used wood off their hands. They also suggest visiting new home construction sites and subdivisions and just asking nicely: often house-building crews just burn waste lumber and shipping pallets when they're no longer useful, which can be a goldmine for a DIY-er looking for wood that's sturdy and safe to use indoors. Hit the link below for even more suggestions.

Kerry katona, Nicholas Parsons and Payday Loans | UK Finance ...

It appears to be getting worse if you have ever taken a loan out with wonga as they have recently announced that they are considering using debt collection services to collect from their defaulters.? The lender has arranged more than one million loans over the past 60 months.

Wonga was founded by Errol Damelin and Jonty Hurwitz. Many people have raised concerns over the number of people taking out these high interest payday loans, particularly over the Christmas period.

Wonga targets consumers that usually cant get a loan from main stream lenders.? They arrange small loans over a short period which can be approved within 15 minutes.? The average size of a wonga loan is ?257.

The most recently announced figures showed that Wonga?s profits had tripled to ?46?million in 2011.A spokesman for wonga said it was considering trying get the money owed by selling bad debts to third parties.

Liberal Democrat MP Ian Swales said that there is a chance that people wonga_debt helpmay feel ?severely harassed?.

However, this controversial business, which has boomed in recent years, has come under fire for the high interest rates charged, particularly to customers who fail to pay their loans back within the original term. Wonga, for example, will charge an interest rate equivalent to an APR of 4,200% if customers borrow money over a year.

Wonga have announced that an average 15 per cent of its short term loans are not paid on time.? Statistics show that Wonga wrote off ?77 million as bad debt in 2011.

Henry Raine, Wonga director of legal affairs, told MPs. ?Bluntly, given the size of or our balance sheet, we have to look at alternatives, when customers fail to pay?.

Nicholas Parsons has come in for some criticism as he has been doing voice-overs for Wonga for over a year now.? Parsons seems to have has sold his respected voice to the controversial lender in what must be a lucrative deal.

And just when you thought it couldn?t get any worse, we are faced with former Atomic Kitten ?singer? Kerry Katona trying to flog these short term loans.? Katona was declared bankrupt in 2008 but since the start of January she has been encouraging Uk residents to take out loans with a company called Cashlady.? For those who are interested Cashlady is not actually a payday lender, but a company which matches borrowers to payday lenders.

Parsons has mostly escaped widespread critism for selling his soul to Wonga, while Katona is thought to be a little too dim to do the sums.
