Baseball team has hit video

By BART O'CONNELL | Tribune correspondent

This year's Saint Leo baseball team may have become more famous than in any other year in program history. And it has nothing to do with their on-field exploits.

The Lions are one of thousands of groups to participate in the "Harlem Shake" online video craze, and their 31-second video, which appears to include several of the team members dressed up in various costumes, has rapidly become one of the most popular worldwide.

As of Thursday night, the Youtube video has received more than 189,000 views.

The video has even been posted by MLB.com, generating speculation that the video could ultimately reach 1-million Youtube views.

The Lions (6-2) have played once since the video's release, a 16-4 rout of Eckerd. This weekend they face West Alabama in a three-game series starting today. A doubleheader will be played Sunday.

Southern Sweep

The men's basketball team took a major step toward earning the top seed in the Sunshine State Conference tournament, winning at No. 6 Florida Southern on Wednesday 79-75 to complete a season sweep of the Moccasins.

The Lions (18-4, 10-2 SSC) outshot, outrebounded and committed fewer turnovers than Florida Southern (18-3, 10-2), scoring the game's final seven points over the last 2:12 to come from behind.

Trent Thomas had five of those seven points down the stretch, and finished as SLU's leading scorer with 15 points, despite coming off the bench. Shaun Adams added 14 points and Cale Girten made three 3-pointers, finishing with 13.

Though tied with Florida Southern in the standings, Saint Leo effectively has a one-game lead thanks to locking up the head-to-head tiebreaker.

The Lions face Florida Tech in Melbourne today at 4 p.m., and have a home game next Wednesday against Tampa.

Women also roll

The women's team also defeated the Moccasins on Wednesday, 66-59, completing another version of the Florida Southern sweep as both men's and women's teams won in Lakeland.

The Lions placed five players in double figures, led by Kinnara Lewis's 19 points off the bench. Lewis was dominant in the second half, scoring 13 of her points as the Lions pulled away.

Chelsea Williams and Keishara Green had 12 points apiece.

The Lions also are headed to Florida Tech today, for a 2 p.m. game, before facing Tampa in the Bowman Center on Wednesday.
