Tongzhou Central Business District by UNStudio - Dezeen

Dutch architects UNStudio have designed a concept for a new business district at Tonghzou in Beijing, consisting of skyscrapers linked by aerial bridges (+ slideshow).

The proposal features?six towers atop a large podium that are linked by bridges topped with gardens and swimming pools.

The development, proposed for the Tongzhou district twelve miles east of central Beijing, would create a million square metres of retail, apartments, offices, hotels and transportation infrastructure.

Located at the confluence of two waterways, the Tongzhou Central Business District's waterfront podium would house shops while the towers would accommodate apartments and offices.

The design of UNStudio?s CBD development is a dynamic composition created by introducing asymmetry in plan, orientation, clustering and fa?ade treatment. This build-up of asymmetries has a far-reaching urban effect whilst simultaneously relating to users on a more personal scale.?The six towers form three lively groups which interact according to a layered choreography.

In relation to the ground and subterranean levels the towers are grouped in three pairs, each standing on a joint platform. As defined by the bridging connections between them, the towers are grouped as a couple, a trio and a single volume.

The silhouette of the towers is derived from a combination of substantial differences between the lower and the upper parts of the buildings and the binding together effects of diagonal wrappings. On the lower parts the towers are marked by dense stacking, whilst towards the top they become smooth and reflective. This textural contrast is mediated by the strong diagonals running the entire length of the towers.

The bridges have numerous roles. They help to cluster the towers and to form interconnections between them which can house many different semi-public functions. They also provide an artificial ground for users of the highest floors.? In addition to the application of active sustainable measures at different scale levels, passive design tools were incorporated from the initial design of the six towers and the podium clusters. Driving features are the winter gardens and green surfaces.

Comprehensive immigration reform opponent Rep. Steve King (R-IA) on Sunday told a host of the Spanish-language network Univision that his speech comparing immigrants to hunting dogs was intended to be ?complimentary.?

Speaking to a crowd in Pocahontas, Iowa in 2012, King had said that the U.S. should only allow the ?pick of the litter? when selecting immigrants.

?You want a good bird dog? You want one that?s going to be aggressive? Pick the one that?s the friskiest, the one that?s going to be engaged the most, not the one that?s over there sleeping in the corner,? he explained. ?You get the pick of the litter and you got yourself a pretty good bird dog.?

On Sunday, Univision?s Jorge Ramos confronted the congressman about the comparison.

?No I didn?t, that?s a mischaracterization,? King insisted. ?Look at the original source. That didn?t happen.?

?I read it,? Ramos pointed out. ?And many people found it offensive.?

?People write things on the internet all the time,? King argued. ?But did you watch the video, the full video? That speech was about celebrating legal immigration.?

?It was not a celebration,? Ramos observed. ?In a town hall meeting in Iowa, you actually compared immigrants to dogs. And many people would find that offensive and racist.?

?I thought you would probably repeat yourself on that. I told you if you watch that video you would know that was a speech celebrating legal immigrants,? King shot back. ?Legal, not illegal immigrants. Legal immigrants. And I said they are the cream of the crop.?

?So you don?t want to apologize because of that comment?? Ramos wondered.

?I said that speech was about the vigor of legal immigration,? the Iowa Republican replied. ?It was a very complimentary speech and no I did not do that.?

?You know it is not complimentary to compare a group of people ? immigrants to animals,? Ramos concluded.

Google Working on an Android App to Control a PC Through Chrome

One of the best things about a modern Android phone is that it has so many features and capabilities such that it easily integrates with most other home electronics.? For instance, you can use your Android phone to control your TV. ?Now, imagine if you can use your phone to control your computer?? Google knows just how many people would love to control their computers remotely using their phones and they are working on an app for that.

Some time ago, Google demonstrated a new Chrome remote desktop application that enables users to take control of a computer or to hand over the control to someone remotely, for instance when they need help with something.? Since chrome and Android are now under one management after a merger back in March, it shouldn?t have been too difficult for the team to port the application to Android.

This information comes from Fran?ois Beaufort, a Google Chromium evangelist, who dug the open source code of Chromium?and posted an image a screenshot of the installed application on his Android device on his Google+ page.? Fran?ois posted ?the chromium team has just started to build a Chromoting Android app? showing that the app could be available for testing soon.

The app is still in development and is now capable of only a fraction of the tasks including authenticating a Google account on the Android phone, establishing peer-to-peer channels to communicate with the host service, connecting and communication with the service over XMPP/ICE and querying and displaying the host list on the Chromoting directory server.

As of now, the application can only connect with the remote server but it cannot take any user input nor show the host desktop.? This means the app is currently useless, but it is great to know that Google is actually working on such a tool.? This device is expected to work on most Android devices including smartphones and tablets but its size could mean it is better suited for tablets.

We will wait and see how it develops.

Chinese banks to set their own lending rates

Chinese is giving the domestic banking industry greater freedom by allowing banks to set their own lending rates.

Previously they were not allowed to lend at rates below a certain level set by the People's Bank of China.

The People's Bank said it hoped the move would lead to lower costs for companies.

"The People's Bank of China has decided, as of 20 July, 2013, to completely relinquish control of the lending rates of financial institutes," the bank said on its website on Friday.

As of Saturday, institutions will be allowed to "set lending rates themselves based on commercial principles".

The moves will lower financing costs for businesses and support China's long-term economic restructuring, the bank said.

The bank added it would not adjust policies on mortgages in order to promote "healthy development of the housing market".

A BBC correspondent said the announcement is seen as a significant part of the government's plan to make the economy more market-oriented.

President Xi Jinping promised to reform the country's economy to encourage more balanced growth when he came to power in March.

Chinese banks have had some freedom to lend at rates below the official level, but very few do so.

The BBC reports analysts think the move is an important step towards allowing China's currency to float freely on currency markets.

There remains an upper limit on how much interest banks are allowed to offer depositors. It currently stands at 3% with a small amount of leeway to go higher.

The People's Bank said controls on mortgage lending will also remain in place, to maintain the "healthy development of the housing market".
